12 Days of CourageAbility

Happy Holidays!

Most of us are familiar with the song the 12 Days Of Christmas; I’d like to switch it up a bit and discuss the 12 Days Of CourageAbility

Here’s my 12 day countdown:

  1. Have and live your dream. As leaders we need to have the courage to acknowledge and leverage OUR passion. If you are living someone else’s dream, have the courage to say it; it’s not a problem to accommodate others, but realize and acknowledge that it’s your choice to live their dream, and not yours.
  2. Document your goals. Now is the best time to put your goals in writing. A colleague, Steve Nudelburg, has a saying: “50 cups of Coffee”. Make a list of 50 people to have a cup of coffee with over the next 30 days. You’ll be amazed at how the “coffee” conversations will help you achieve your goals.
  3. Commit to your goals. This can be difficult, but commitment means taking action. If you say you are going to call 5 people a day, do it! If you say you are going to exercise daily, then schedule time (even if it’s 15 minutes each day). You spend time on what you value. Each day take 15 minutes and review your written goals. Saying you’re going to do something is not commitment; doing it is.
  4. Understand your strengths and the strengths of others. You can’t do everything yourself; allow others to help you. Bring the experts into your life. I was with someone the other day who said she can’t delegate because she doesn’t trust others to do the task as well as she does. This attitude will impede the progress of others, wear you out, and you’ll likely complain that you can’t get everything done. Take a risk. Understand the strengths of others, help them grow, and allow them to take ownership and get it done.
  5. Communicate with confidence and clarity. I say this is our most important task in life and I am still working on it daily. There are many ways you can help yourself. Marilyn Brown (from our PeopleTeam), attends ToastMasters; I highly recommend adding it to your New Year’s list.
  6. Understand and manage conflict with a purpose. Here is a quote: Without conflict there is no leadership. I always say that conflict must occur for there to be growth, it must however be done in a healthy, honoring, respectful manner. How are you stretching yourself to deal with a difficult situation? If you don’t stretch yourself and others, there is no leadership.
  7. Grow and develop others. As leaders our job is to help others achieve their goals and objectives. Are you mentoring others to help them grow? Do you and your team have Individual Development Plans? Do you track the progress? In the New Year I commit to working harder at knowing the plans and goals of my team members to see how I help them achieve and conquer their plans.
  8. Effective delegation. This, combined with number 4, is critical. If you are doing everything yourself you will be extremely tired. When I first started PeopleTek, I felt no one could run the Leadership Journey as well as I did. What I found out is that others do it even better!
  9. Develop a skill. In 2015 my plan is to be more organized; this is not only self driven, but is also based on my recent 360 feedback conducted by Executive Coach Meade Dickerson. To my PeopleTek Team: Thank you so much for the feedback. Does anyone else want to do a 360?
  10. Remain controlled. Composure is so important for a leader. It is a skill that can be developed, and although there are many tools, emotional intelligence is a great one. Give us a call.
  11. Reward and recognize. Do you reward others based on goals, or just randomly? Rewards need to be intentional and based on the behavior and results you would like to see more of. When I’ve coached others, I find they either reward too much, (without having a concrete reason for the reward), or they never reward at all, feeling everything is “just part of the job”. Both of these will lead to morale issues.
  12. Succeed and learn from failure. I think this is so important because unless we take a risk we will see very little change.

Now is the best time to give yourself the biggest Christmas and New Years gift of a lifetime:

Step out of your comfort zone and take a chance with something important to you!

Warmest Wishes,

Mike

How to be the Best

Want to know how your leadership practices compare against leaders identified as “the best”? Read on!

The HayGroup conducted surveys with input from 17,000 individuals and 2,100 organizations from 115 countries.

They first selected what they considered to be the 2014 Top 20 Best Companies for Leadership. The findings were:

  1. Procter & Gamble
  2. General Electric
  3. Coca-Cola
  4. IBM
  5. Unilever
  6. Intel
  7. McDonald’s
  8. Samsung
  9. 3M
  10. Hewlett-Packard
  11. PepsiCo
  12. Toyota
  13. Accenture
  14. Siemens
  15. Telefónica
  16. BASF
  17. Johnson & Johnson
  18. Citigroup
  19. IKEA
  20. Pfizer

They determined that the Best Companies for Leadership purposefully develop their leaders, they clearly understand capabilities required for success, and they ensure that current leaders as well as high performers obtain experiences which build their skill-sets.

  • 90% of the top 20 companies use a formal talent review process to fill leadership positions, compared to 56%
  • of other companies
  • 93% of the top 20 companies identify individuals as “high potentials” for future leadership roles compared to
  • 67% of other companies
  • 84% of the top 20 companies actively manage a pool of successors for mission critical roles compared to 50% of other companies

Development is conducted via classroom based leadership development programs which include lectures, simulations, and role plays. It also includes mentoring by senior leaders, coaching by trained coaches, and establishing a deliberate career path.

Do you conduct formal talent reviews? Do you know who your high performers are? Do you update your succession plans yearly? We’re guessing most of you do. What may be lacking is formal leadership development and career planning.

What are you doing to accelerate the growth of your high performers? And, what about your own professional growth?

Thanks and Gratitude

Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation.”
–Brian Tracy

Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn’t learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn’t learn a little, at least we didn’t get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn’t die; so, let us all be thankful.
–Buddha

Happy Thanksgiving!

While the U.S. celebrates Thanksgiving the last Thursday of each November, other countries and cultures also celebrate similar holidays, most having different festival dates and holiday names, but all with the same intent – to give thanks.

Did you know Canada may have been the first to celebrate Thanksgiving, way back in 1578?

Other examples of celebrating thanks include China’s Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, Pongal in India, Chusok in Korea, Tet Trung Thu in Vietnam, the Jewish Feast of Sukkot, and in Germany there’s Erntedankfest.

Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received. Thankfulness is the natural impulse to express that feeling. Thanksgiving is the following of that impulse.
–Henry Van Dyke

Giving thanks and expressing gratitude is healthy in both our personal and professional lives!

Take time to reflect on the positive.

  • What / whom do you appreciate? Who appreciates you?
  • What inspires you? How do you inspire others?
  • Is there pleasure and enjoyment at home? What about at work?
  • What have you accomplished? Who’s shared in those accomplishments?
  • As a leader, a friend, a family member, or a co-worker, let others know how they add value to your life and thank them.

We all can value our personal and professional relationships, and we all have the ability to motivate, influence, inspire, and appreciate others.

And, in the words of John Hersey:

Thankfulness breeds success.

Leaders lead by example. Share what you’re thankful for!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Do You Trust Your Team?

Individuals and organizations continually rate trust as an issue among co-workers, across organizations, with higher ranking leaders, and sometimes even with clients!

Matter of fact, in the majority of assessments we conduct for teams and organizations, trust is the number one topic that is identified as a “need”. Does this hit a chord with you? Do you feel more could be accomplished, that collaboration would be greater, and goals more readily attained if levels of trust were stronger? Do you trust your team?

When people honor each other, there is a trust established that leads to synergy, interdependence, and deep respect. Both parties make decisions and choices based on what is right, what is best, what is valued most highly.
–Blaine Lee

Our team just completed the Five Behaviors Of A Cohesive Team Assessment (derived from Patrick Lencioni’s Five Dysfunctions Of A Team. We’re currently in the process of debriefing each component, and although we scored high as a team, there were a few scores that caused reflection, and trust was one of them. (The evaluated components include building trust, mastering conflict, achieving commitment, embracing accountability, and focusing on results).

Transparency, Honesty, and Vulnerability

These traits are what Lencioni has determined to be key ingredients required for a team to be trusting and truly cohesive. In the assessment, team members score the team (not individuals) on trust related questions, and a summary of the compiled results provides specific areas to address, with suggestions for growing trust levels.

Team members provide their perceptions relative to the team’s ability to:

  • Admit weaknesses and mistakes
  • Ask for help
  • Accept questions and input regarding areas of responsibility
  • Give one another the benefit of the doubt before arriving at negative conclusions
  • Offer and accept apologies without hesitation

Despite scoring high, we felt we could become even stronger, brainstormed possible solutions to do so, and committed to speaking up if we deviated from our commitments. The intent? To not dilute our ability to become an even stronger, higher performing, more trusting team.

Trust is the foundation for success and fosters the flow of new and creative ideas. And as Warren Bemis says: Trust is the lubrication that makes it possible for organizations to work. You need to trust your team in order to succeed.

How would your team score itself in the transparency, honesty, and vulnerability categories?
