Heathfield has published what she views as the top ten reasons why employees quit:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Relationship with the boss<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bored and unchallenged with the work<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Relationships with co-workers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Opportunities to use their skills and abilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Contribution of their work to the organization\u2019s business goals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Autonomy and independence on the job<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>7.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Meaningfulness of the employee&#8217;s job<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>8.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Knowledge about your organization\u2019s financial stability<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>9.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Overall corporate culture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>10.\u00a0 Management\u2019s recognition of employee job performance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Other studies report that a &#8220;bad boss&#8221; is the number #1 reason for quitting, but having a relationship with the boss is different. The employee wants feedback, direction, and recognition, with a desire for open lines of communication. Having trust in the relationship is also a plus!<\/p>\n<p>Employees want a stable work environment and they want to feel their contributions are valued and meaningful for the success of their organization. They also want their contributions to be acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p>They want a work environment where relationships exist between team members, and where team members collaborate and build on one another\u2019s ideas.<\/p>\n<p>What type of relationships do you have with your direct reports and peers?
