{"id":88830,"date":"2024-08-20T08:57:46","date_gmt":"2024-08-20T12:57:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peopletekcoaching.com\/staging\/?p=88830"},"modified":"2024-08-20T08:59:36","modified_gmt":"2024-08-20T12:59:36","slug":"mastering-communication-how-tone-and-body-language-shape-your-message","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peopletekcoaching.com\/staging\/2024\/08\/20\/mastering-communication-how-tone-and-body-language-shape-your-message\/","title":{"rendered":"Mastering Communication: How Tone and Body Language Shape Your Message"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"88830\" class=\"elementor elementor-88830\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-27c2b6f dsvy-col-stretched-none dsvy-bg-color-over-image elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"27c2b6f\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-c947c81 dsvy-bg-color-over-image\" data-id=\"c947c81\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-190be1e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"190be1e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We all know that being an effective communicator is a major part of being a successful leader, but we may not be aware that communication is broken down into three segments.<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Researcher Albert Mehrabian first analyzed the components of a face-to-face conversation and found that:<\/span><\/div><div><br \/><ul><li><em><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Our words account for only 7% of how our message is interpreted<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/li><li><em><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Our tone accounts for 38% of the message<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/li><li><em><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The remaining 55% is attributed to our body language<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/li><\/ul><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Our body language provides signals about our mood, how engaged we are, and our level of receptiveness (this applies to both the sender and receiver of the message).<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We need to be keenly aware of our posture, how we are standing or sitting, if we are using hand gestures, and if we are making eye contact (and hopefully not rolling our eyes!).<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Having eye contact is important as it helps maintain focus and attention, and when eye contact is lacking, or quickly shifting, the message may be viewed as one not to be trusted.<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Regarding posture, think about if you lean in during a conversation, cross your arms, slouch, lean back in your chair, smile or have a poker face, nod to indicate you\u2019re truly listening, or even if you move around during the conversation.<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There\u2019s also a recommendation to mirror the expression of the person delivering the message. This is helpful to show receptiveness and openness. An example is if the person is struggling with an issue, actively listen, show empathy, and be understanding. Another is that if great news is being shared, have a genuine smile and a sparkle in your eye!<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With so many of us working virtually, pay extra attention to your tone, how attentive you are being, and how you are sitting and engaging others while on teleconference calls. It\u2019s pretty easy to tell who\u2019s multi-tasking and listening with &#8220;one ear&#8221;.<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Active listening and using appropriate body language must become two of our strongest skills in order to be a strong communicator.
