What\u2019s key is understanding what they are and how to manage them.<\/span><\/p><p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Per NeuroLeadership:<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/div><div><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Simply put, bias is what happens in our own brains, while feelings of inclusion or exclusion are what happens in other people&#8217;s brains.<\/i><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Unconscious bias, or implicit bias, is an assumption or belief you have in favor of or against a person or a group of people. These prejudices are unintentional; they happen outside of your awareness.<\/i><\/span><br \/><i><\/i><br \/><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\">Common Workplace biases include:<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div><div><p>\u00a0<\/p><div><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Ability<\/span><\/strong><\/div><div><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Affinity<\/span><\/strong><\/div><div><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Age<\/span><\/strong><\/div><div><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Appearance\u00a0(weight\/grooming)<\/span><\/strong><\/div><div><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Authority<\/span><\/strong><\/div><div><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Confirmation<\/span><\/strong><\/div><div><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">7.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Conformity<\/span><\/strong><\/div><div><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">8.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Gender<\/span><\/strong><\/div><div><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">9.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Race\/heritage\/accents<\/span><\/strong><\/div><div><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">10.\u00a0Religion<\/span><\/strong><\/div><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When you look at our <em><strong>COMPASS<\/strong><\/em> you can see that all the components have the potential to be impacted by biases, and these components are critical for effective leadership and career growth.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Biases can lead to:\u00a0<i>unfair assumptions, preferential treatment (by the boss and others),\u00a0<\/i><i>discrimination, harassment and bullying, and exclusionary behavior<\/i>. They can also stifle a person\u2019s ability to leverage their &#8220;magic dust&#8221;\u00ae (their special talents). As leaders we need to recognize that everyone excels in a variety of things, and that although some colleagues may excel at certain tasks, others will be more effective in other roles and actions.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">How can we improve? We can start with expanding our competencies by learning more about others that are different from ourselves, supplemented with the intent to appreciate those differences.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What biases have you observed in the workplace?
