{"id":2936,"date":"2011-10-24T17:28:54","date_gmt":"2011-10-24T17:28:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev-peopletekcoaching.pantheon.io\/?p=2936"},"modified":"2021-10-14T21:37:26","modified_gmt":"2021-10-14T21:37:26","slug":"a-carrot-an-egg-or-coffee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peopletekcoaching.com\/staging\/2011\/10\/24\/a-carrot-an-egg-or-coffee\/","title":{"rendered":"A Carrot, an Egg, or Coffee"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>The happiest of people don\u2019t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes\u00a0their way.<br \/>\n&#8211;Author Unknown<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her.\u00a0\u00a0She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. \u00a0She was tired of fighting and struggling.\u00a0 It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother took her to the kitchen. \u00a0She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. \u00a0Soon the pots came to boil.\u00a0 In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans.\u00a0 She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.<\/p>\n<p>In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners.\u00a0 She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl.\u00a0 She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl.\u00a0 Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. \u00a0Turning to her daughter, she asked, \u201cTell me what you see\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarrots, eggs, and coffee,\u201d she replied.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots.\u00a0 She did and noted that they were soft. \u00a0The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it.\u00a0 After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg.\u00a0 Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. \u00a0The daughter smiled, as she tasted its rich aroma the daughter then asked, \u201cWhat does it mean, mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water.\u00a0 Each reacted differently.<\/p>\n<p>The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. \u00a0However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak.\u00a0 The egg had been fragile.\u00a0 Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its insides became hardened.\u00a0 The ground coffee beans were unique, however. \u00a0After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich are you?\u201d she asked her daughter. \u201d\u00a0 When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond?\u00a0 Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Think of this: Which am I? \u00a0Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength? \u00a0Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? \u00a0Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart? \u00a0Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain.\u00a0 When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor.<\/p>\n<p>If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. \u00a0When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate yourself to another level? \u00a0How do you handle adversity? \u00a0Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?<\/p>\n<p>May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you happy.\u00a0 The happiest of people don\u2019t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. \u00a0The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can\u2019t go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling.
