{"id":2110,"date":"2011-08-11T04:04:34","date_gmt":"2011-08-11T04:04:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev-peopletekcoaching.pantheon.io\/?p=2110"},"modified":"2021-10-14T21:37:26","modified_gmt":"2021-10-14T21:37:26","slug":"asking-key-questions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peopletekcoaching.com\/staging\/2011\/08\/11\/asking-key-questions\/","title":{"rendered":"Asking Key Questions"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Key Components of Leadership<\/h2>\n<p>Asking questions to engage others, listening, and acknowledging what you heard, are \u00a0key components for leadership success.<\/p>\n<p>Dear Leaders,<\/p>\n<p>Do you truly know what\u2019s happening in the workplace?\u00a0 You may be on top project plans, deliverables, customer rosters, and status updates, but what about having a sense of how and what employees and staff are feeling and hearing?<\/p>\n<p>As a leader, it\u2019s important to be aware of the pulse on the floor.\u00a0 We\u2019re not talking about gossip, (although that will impact behaviors and attitudes), but rather how the staff feels about the work environment in general.\u00a0 Some key areas of impact include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Workload management<\/li>\n<li>Team support<\/li>\n<li>Matrix management<\/li>\n<li>Deadline dependencies<\/li>\n<li>Personal issues impacting work<\/li>\n<li>Critical skills\/knowledge<\/li>\n<li>Workplace conflicts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some leaders have a gift for \u201cbeing in the know\u201d; they may have an open door policy that invites informal exchanges, they may be viewed as a good listener, or they may just have team members that want to keep them informed.<\/p>\n<p>Not all leaders are as fortunate and could benefit by taking advantage of break-room and hallway chats.\u00a0 This doesn\u2019t come natural for some, so John McKee, author for IT Leadership, shares his favorite 7 questions to engage others to \u201cget in the know\u201d:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What\u2019s the biggest issue on your plate right now?<\/li>\n<li>If I could do just one thing to make you more successful, what would it be?<\/li>\n<li>What\u2019s the dumbest thing the company (or department) is doing (or working on)?<\/li>\n<li>If you had my job what would you focus on?<\/li>\n<li>What\u2019s waking you up at night?<\/li>\n<li>Do you have the tools and resources you need to do your job in the best possible way?<\/li>\n<li>How can I help you to be more successful?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Another idea is to ask each team member to give a 60 second update during staff meetings; the intent is to share their opinion of the pulse of the business, and provide them with an opportunity to share something about their personal life.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure you\u2019re \u201cin the know\u201d \u2013 open lines of communication builds trust, promotes success, and grows the bottom line!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Key Components of Leadership Asking questions to engage others, listening, and acknowledging what you heard, are \u00a0key components for leadership success.
