If you had to pick, which factor would you choose as the top reason for individuals leaving their current job:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Salary\/benefits<\/li>\n<li>Lack of recognition<\/li>\n<li>Poor management\/leadership<\/li>\n<li>Growth opportunities<\/li>\n<li>Career change<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The answer may surprise you. The <i>lack of growth opportunities<\/i>\u00a0has been identified as the number one reason for attrition in 2013!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Although a paycheck is a powerful motivator, it should never be the only reason for coming to work day after day.<br \/>\n&#8211;Robert Bullock<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Attrition Relief<\/h2>\n<p>Compensation is a key factor for job retention, as are leadership skills and rewards and recognition, but the\u00a0opportunity for career growth is #1.<\/p>\n<p>You might not always have the ability to increase salary or improve benefits for your staff, but as a leader you can assist with professional growth for both your team overall, and for individual team members.<\/p>\n<p>Do you consistently review employee development plans? Is cross-training something that\u2019s utilized? What about assigning and utilizing mentors?<\/p>\n<p>Start at the individual level. What skill-sets could be further developed? Are there any \u201cneeds\u201d in each person\u2019s current role\/position?\u00a0 Next, consider future responsibilities and new positions.\u00a0 (Don\u2019t limit it to promotional opportunities; keep lateral moves in mind).<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t forget to engage the employee!\u00a0 You may think you\u2019re aware of their ideal career path, but you\u2019ll want to validate it. Understand the preferred styles and strengths of your team members.\u00a0 Ask them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do you like best about your job?<\/li>\n<li>Are there any skills you\u2019d like to develop\/enhance?<\/li>\n<li>How do you feel you contribute most for attaining the goals of the team?<\/li>\n<li>What would you like your next position to be?<\/li>\n<li>How can I help you achieve this?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Satisfying the developmental \u201cwants\u201d of your staff\u00a0will improve results and reduce attrition.
