{"id":1146,"date":"2014-02-13T00:00:58","date_gmt":"2014-02-13T00:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev-peopletekcoaching.pantheon.io\/?p=1146"},"modified":"2021-10-14T21:37:48","modified_gmt":"2021-10-14T21:37:48","slug":"challenges-accept-or-avoid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peopletekcoaching.com\/staging\/2014\/02\/13\/challenges-accept-or-avoid\/","title":{"rendered":"Challenges: Accept or Avoid?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Journalist\u00a0Fareed Zakaria wrote the book, <em>The Post-American World<\/em>.\u00a0One area of concern that was addressed was\u00a0the belief that organizations are not adapting well to emerging challenges.<\/p>\n<p>This is only one of the themes, but one we feel readily applies to leadership\u00a0styles and skills.<\/p>\n<h2>Zakaria&#8217;s Guidelines for Success in the Face of Challenges<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Choose. <\/strong>Choose\u00a0priorities rather than trying to have it all.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Our comment:\u00a0Have clear goals, ensure all behaviors and tasks support those goals, and understand you can\u2019t be everything to everyone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Build broad rules, not narrow interests.\u00a0<\/strong>Recommit to international institutions and mechanisms.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Our comment:\u00a0Set goals and standards, and then let your people excel \u2013 they don\u2019t need (or want) to be told HOW to do something, but they do need clear expectations and the desired outcome.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Be Bismarck, not Britain.\u00a0<\/strong>Maintain excellent relations with everyone, rather than offset and balance emerging powers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Our comment:\u00a0Build and maintain relationships, address differences in a healthy way, listen, and take more time to think of what \u201ccould\u201d be done differently. Make an effort to relate and communicate to others in their terms and style.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Order \u00e0 la carte.\u00a0<\/strong>Address problems through a variety of different structures (e.g. sometimes UN, sometimes NATO, sometimes\u00a0OAS).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Our comment:\u00a0Understand the needs and goals of others. What are their strengths? How do they best add value?
