{"id":11425,"date":"2019-11-07T12:43:53","date_gmt":"2019-11-07T17:43:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peopletekcoaching.com\/staging\/?p=11425"},"modified":"2021-10-14T21:39:07","modified_gmt":"2021-10-14T21:39:07","slug":"inspire-vs-motivate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peopletekcoaching.com\/staging\/2019\/11\/07\/inspire-vs-motivate\/","title":{"rendered":"Inspire vs Motivate"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.\u2014John Quincy Adams<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Do you view the words &#8220;inspire&#8221; and &#8220;motivate&#8221; to mean the same thing?<\/strong> Marissa Levin, Founder and CEO, Successful Culture feels they are very different and provides the following differentiators:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Inspire&#8221;<\/strong> translates to <em>&#8220;in spirit.&#8221;<\/em> Inspiration comes from within.<\/li>\n<li>The root word of <strong>&#8220;Motivate&#8221;<\/strong> is <em>&#8220;motive,&#8221;<\/em> which is an external force that causes us to take action<\/li>\n<li><strong>Motivation<\/strong> <em>pushes<\/em> you to accomplish a task, or work through a difficult event, even when you would rather be doing anything else. We are motivated by a result.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inspiration<\/strong> <em>pulls<\/em> you towards something that stirs your heart, mind, or spirit. We are inspired by a person, an event, or a circumstance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How do you feel about these definitions? We think it makes sense that if your heart, mind, or spirit are &#8220;stirred&#8221;, a person will indeed be inspired and more engaged, and per a study by Bain Research, they will also be<strong> twice as productive.<\/strong> This links to our &#8220;Magic Dust&#8221;\u2122 theory; when a person is in the position to do what they enjoy, and feel they add value, they thrive and results grow.<\/p>\n<p>So as a leader, how can we increase inspiration levels? Surveys state:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set stretch goals with your team<\/li>\n<li>Commit to developing direct reports<\/li>\n<li>Engage in collaborative behavior<\/li>\n<li>Build emotional connections with team members and others you interact with<\/li>\n<li>Establish, share, and continually talk about how your vision (or your organization\u2019s vision) can be supported<\/li>\n<li>Communicate clearly and often<\/li>\n<li>Explain and manage change<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s up to us as leaders to model these behaviors and recognize others when they display them.
