It\u2019s no wonder that these 2 qualities appear on almost every successful leader\u2019s profile.\u00a0You won\u2019t succeed as a leader unless you have the confidence and trust of your team, your peers, and your customers, and your team will not succeed if the members are perceived as not trustworthy.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To be a leader (successful or otherwise), you must have followers.<\/li>\n<li>You can\u2019t succeed without the trust and confidence of your team.<\/li>\n<li>Your peers, subordinates, and co-workers will work around you if you are perceived as untrustworthy or not living the values you require from them.<\/li>\n<li>To be successful, integrity must be a constant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>Tom Peters says: There is no such thing as a minor lapse in integrity (or trust).<\/p>\n<p>(Excerpt from <em>For Your Improvement<\/em> by Lombardo and Eichinger)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>A skilled leader:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is widely trusted<\/li>\n<li>Is seen as a direct, truthful individual<\/li>\n<li>Can present the unvarnished truth in an appropriate and helpful manner<\/li>\n<li>Keeps confidences<\/li>\n<li>Admits mistakes<\/li>\n<li>Doesn\u2019t misrepresent him\/herself for personal gain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Leadership Mistakes That Cause\u00a0Loss of Trust<\/h2>\n<p>These common leadership mistakes can cause trust to be lost or to never obtained in the first place. As your reading, be honest with yourself about whether or not you could be committing any of these mistakes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Being too direct. People can be caught off guard and become uncomfortable. As a result, the message is lost.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Pointing fingers or being too quick to assess blame.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Playing favorites or only give a \u201cchosen few\u201d opportunities.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Jumping to conclusions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Failure to solicit opinions or alternative ideas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Doesn\u2019t \u201cwalk the talk.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/peopletekcoaching.com\/staging\/learn-to-say-no\/\">Inability to say no<\/a> and over committing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Not treating others respectfully.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Won\u2019t take a stand.\u00a0(Or making one and continually changing it.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Personal disorganization.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Inconsistent behaviors, habits, and expectations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Lack of responsiveness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Inability to admit mistakes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Suggestions for Leadership Growth<\/h2>\n<p>If you think you are exhibiting any of the above trust eroding behaviors, here are some tips to help you become a better, more trustworthy leader.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take time to assess all the reasons others may have for not trusting you. Write them down!<\/li>\n<li>Determine what skills you overuse or under-use.<\/li>\n<li>Select a highly trusted leader; identify the behaviors that make them successful, and add them to your daily routine.<\/li>\n<li>Set boundaries! This will help with time management and priorities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>When people honor each other, there is a trust established that leads to synergy, interdependence, and deep respect. Both parties make decisions and choices based on what is right, what is best, what is valued most highly.<br \/>\n\u2013Blaine Lee<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Trust produces positive and productive relationships and improves results.
