We all know, or have worked with, toxic people who create workplace conflict. Toxicity covers a lot of territory; some examples include poor attitude, lack of commitment and accountability, taking credit for the work of others, whiners\/complainers, finger pointing, intentionally misleading others, and having a closed mindset. (Any others come to mind?).<\/p>\n<p>Author Dr. Travis Bradberry provides 12 ways to manage toxic people who create workplace conflict (excerpts are):<\/p>\n<p><strong>Set limits<\/strong><br \/>\nA great way to set limits is to ask complainers how they intend to fix the problem. They may stop complaining to you!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Choose your battles<\/strong><br \/>\nStand your ground, pick the &#8220;right time&#8221; to address the conflict, and use your emotional intelligence skills to keep conversations healthy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rise up<\/strong><br \/>\nDon\u2019t allow yourself to respond emotionally and get sucked in; remain fact based.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stay aware of your emotions<\/strong><br \/>\nRecognize when your buttons are being pushed. Take the time you need to regroup.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Establish boundaries<\/strong><br \/>\nDecide when and where you\u2019ll engage a difficult person, this allows you take control.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t let <em>anyone<\/em> limit your joy<\/strong><br \/>\nEmotionally intelligent people don\u2019t let anyone\u2019s opinions or snide remarks take away their sense of accomplishment or &#8220;happy&#8221; feelings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t focus on problems\u2014only solutions<\/strong><br \/>\nQuit thinking about how troubling your difficult person is, and instead focus on how you\u2019re going to go about handling them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t forget<\/strong><br \/>\nEmotionally intelligent people are quick to forgive, but that doesn\u2019t mean that they forget.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Squash negative self-talk<\/strong><br \/>\nNegative self-talk is unrealistic, unnecessary and self-defeating.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Limit your caffeine intake<\/strong><br \/>\nCaffeine triggers the release of adrenaline and is the source of &#8220;fight-or-flight&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get some sleep<\/strong><br \/>\nSleep has a direct link with increasing emotional intelligence and managing stress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Use your support system<\/strong><br \/>\nRecognize the weaknesses in your approach with toxic people and tap into your support system to gain their perspectives.<\/p>\n<p>What can you do to better manage toxic people who create workplace conflict?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Toxic people attach themselves like cinder blocks tied to your ankles,<br \/>\nand then invite you for a swim in their poisoned waters.\u2015 John Mark Green<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you notice someone does something toxic the first time, don&#8217;t wait for the second time before you address it or cut them off. . . \u00a0Shahida Arabi Let\u2019s be honest.
