Joy is a contributing factor for success.
When you’re on your way to work, how are you feeling? Do you have feelings of stress or dread? Some do. What about feeling good and looking forward to your workday? Some also experience this.
(Try this. When you drive to work, your rearview mirror is in one position. When you leave work for the day, how often do you need to readjust it? Moving it up or down can be telling of how your day went).
Based on a global survey from A.T. Kearney, the joy factor varies widely by role, region, and the generation we are part of. Below are excerpts of their findings:
- 90% of respondents expected to experience joy at work but only 37% reported finding it
- In the Americas 40% reported finding joy in their workplace
- 57% of Gen X respondents found joy at work
- 44% of Millennials felt joy at work
They shared the following 7 factors contributing to joy as:
- Committed to achieving the company’s vision and strategy
- Believes the company makes a positive impact to their society
- Understands the company’s vision and strategy for the future
- Celebrates shared team successes
- Feels strong bonds within the team (relationships!)
- Feels their talents are recognized and utilized (magic dust!)
- Colleagues acknowledge one another’s contributions to the team
Workplaces are more likely to thrive when colleagues are felt valued, connected with one another and the organization as a whole, and are inspired and motivated.
As a leader, how are you contributing to ensuring there’s joy at work? Let us know!
When work is a pleasure, life is a joy! When work is a duty, life is slavery.
